Chapter Sixteen

Charlie took charge of their next date.

“Bowling? Are we going in here?” Erica asked as they stopped outside the building.

Charlie wasn’t sure how Erica would feel about bowling—nothing about her screamed that she was the bowling type. But she didn’t look horrified—more like intrigued. “We are.”

“I’ve never done it before,” Erica said.

“You’ve never been bowling?”

“No.” Erica looked down at her feet. “Do I have to wear those funny shoes?”

Charlie looked down too. “I think those heels might be considered a safety risk. I don’t even know how you walk in them, let alone do anything else.” She laughed at Erica’s horrified face. “I have to wear the funny shoes too. Don’t be such a snob.”

“I am a snob, self-admittedly. It’s bred into me, I’m powerless against it. You already know this.”

“I do. But you’re my snob, so it’s fine.” Oops. That had just slipped out. “Come on. Let’s go get you fitted for your funny shoes,” she added quickly in an attempt to glaze over the comment.

Erica’s amused look told Charlie that her glazing hadn’t worked. “Am I now?”

Of course, Erica pulled her on her slip. At least she hadn’t argued with the statement because the truth was, she already knew that she wanted Erica to be hers, even if she hadn’t meant to come right out and say it. Charlie dragged her by the hand through the front door. “Don’t distract me. Shoes. Let’s go. I hadn’t even thought about it, but now I’m dying to see your snobby little expression when you have to put them on.”

Charlie paid at the desk and was handed two pairs of bowling shoes. She and Erica wore the same size, which made it easier.

She held them up. “Black with fluorescent pink swirls, or white with purple and green stripes?”

Erica glared at her. “How many strange, sweaty feet have been in those already?”

“They wash them, I’m sure.” Charlie looked between the two pairs and then looked at Erica. “I feel like you’re pink and swirly.”

Erica still glared but the corner of her mouth quirked up. She reached out and took the pair from Charlie, holding them out with the tip of her finger and her thumb like they might jump and bite her at any second. “One snobby expression, coming right up.”

They sat side by side on the bench as they put on their rented footwear. It took Charlie twice as long because she kept pausing to laugh at the disgusted faces that Erica was pulling—but to her credit, she put them on anyway. Charlie didn’t believe her protests for a second. Erica was more excited than she let on.

To further prove that point, Erica stood up and gave a ta da motion as she twirled her foot round and round. “I think you’re right. I am pink and swirly.”

“I told you.” She stood up too. “How about me? Am I green and stripey?”

Erica looked her up and down. “You’re gorgeous.” She leaned in and kissed her cheek. “Now, teach me how to bowl.
